Tengboche monastery and Ama Dablam views

2 min read

Tengboche, at about 3,870 m, is the cultural centre of the Khumbu and one of the most photographed places on the Everest View trek. The monastery sits on a forested ridge with Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse behind it, and it has been an important Buddhist centre for the Sherpa community for many years. A night at Tengboche is a quiet and atmospheric part of the trek.

The setting

The monastery stands on a high saddle above the Dudh Koshi and Imja Khola rivers, surrounded by rhododendron and juniper. On a clear morning Ama Dablam looks close enough to touch, and the view toward Everest and Lhotse opens above the ridge. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons, so staying overnight gives you the best light.

Visiting the monastery

Visitors are usually welcome during set hours, and many join the prayers in the evening or morning. Ask your guide about timing. Inside, the walls are covered with paintings, and monks chant to the sound of drums, horns and cymbals. It is a rare chance to sit quietly in a living monastery.

Etiquette

  • Remove your shoes and hat before entering.
  • Dress modestly and speak quietly.
  • Do not photograph inside unless permission is clearly given.
  • Walk clockwise around the monastery, mani walls and chortens.
  • A small donation is appreciated but not required.

The walk from Namche

The route from Namche contours above the valley, descends to the river at Phunki Tenga and climbs through forest to Tengboche. It takes five to six hours with rest stops. The final climb is steady and steep, so take your time.

Staying at Tengboche

Lodges are simple but comfortable, and the dining rooms are warm. The night can be cold, with frost on the ground, so bring warm layers. Try the bakery for a snack, and watch the sunset on the peaks.
