Ghandruk is in the Annapurna Conservation Area, so you need an ACAP entry permit and a TIMS card. Fees change, so confirm them when you book. Pokhara is about one to two hours by road to the trailhead.
Permits and fees
Ghandruk lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, so you pay an entry fee to the conservation project. Registration rules have changed in recent years, with some areas replacing the old TIMS card with local permits, so we recommend confirming the current requirements with your operator before travel. Carry your passport and a few passport-size photographs.
Where permits are checked
The first check post is near Birethanti, on the road from Nayapul. Officers record your name and passport number, and the same details are checked at later posts.
Getting to the trailhead
Nayapul is around 1.5 hours by road from Pokhara. Jeeps continue beyond it to Kimche, which shortens the walk to Ghandruk to about two hours. Taxis and shared jeeps run from Pokhara's Baglung bus park, and we can arrange private transfers.
Where to stay
The village has a mix of community-run lodges and private guesthouses. Rooms are simple with shared bathrooms. Booking ahead is wise in October and April.
Guides and porters
A guide is not required for the route to Ghandruk, which is clear and busy, but a guide is helpful if you are continuing to Tadapani or higher. Porters can carry bags, and fair rates are published at the village office.
Money, signal and charging
Carry cash in rupees. Mobile signal is available and many lodges have Wi-Fi, usually for a fee. Charging points are provided, but may cost a small amount.
Responsible travel
Use refillable bottles and filtered water when possible. Support local lodges and buy handicrafts from village shops. Dress modestly and ask before photographing people.
If you are continuing
If you plan to continue to Ghorepani or Annapurna Base Camp, carry your permits and book lodges early in the busy seasons.
