Packing list for the Gokyo Lakes trek

3 min read

Gokyo is cold, high and remote enough that your packing choices matter. Temperatures at the lakes can drop to minus 10 degrees Celsius or lower at night, even in the best seasons, while Namche can feel mild at midday. The list below is a good basis, and you can adjust it for season and personal comfort.

Clothing

  • Three base layers, ideally merino or synthetic.
  • Two mid layers, such as fleece or light synthetic jackets.
  • A down jacket rated for very cold conditions.
  • A waterproof and windproof shell jacket and trousers.
  • Two trekking trousers and one thermal legging.
  • Warm hat, sun hat, buff, liner gloves and warm outer gloves.
  • Five to six pairs of trekking socks and one warm sleeping pair.

Footwear

Waterproof, well-worn trekking boots with good ankle support are essential. Consider lightly insulated boots for winter. Add camp shoes and gaiters. Microspikes or crampons are recommended for Renjo La or Cho La, especially early or late in the season.

Sleeping

A sleeping bag rated to about minus 15 degrees Celsius is wise for Gokyo. Many lodges provide blankets, but you cannot rely on them. A liner adds warmth, and an insulated bottle filled with hot water makes nights more comfortable.

Health and personal

  • Sunglasses with strong UV protection, and a spare pair.
  • High-factor sun cream and lip balm.
  • Water purification tablets or filter and a durable bottle.
  • Pain relief, rehydration salts, blister care and personal medicines.
  • Hand sanitiser, wet wipes, toilet paper and a small towel.

Equipment

Trekking poles, a headlamp with spare batteries, a power bank and a waterproof stuff sack protect your gear. A 30 to 35 litre daypack carries what you need during the day. A duffel bag of about 60 to 70 litres goes to the porters, and weight limits apply for flights to Lukla.

Rent or buy

Many items can be rented or bought in Kathmandu, including sleeping bags and down jackets. Check the quality and fit before you rely on them. Leave valuables and non-essential luggage at your hotel.

Layering for the lake

For mornings at Gokyo wear a base layer, fleece, down jacket and shell. For midday walking, remove the down jacket. In the evening wear everything again. Keep a warm hat, buff and gloves within reach. This system keeps you comfortable across a range of conditions.

Electronics and power

Bring a power bank of at least 10,000 mAh, a charging cable and a universal adapter. Keep devices warm at night inside your sleeping bag. Charging costs more at altitude, so conserve battery by using airplane mode and a dim screen.

Weight management

Weigh your bag at home, aim for under 12 kilograms for the porter and 5 to 6 kilograms for your daypack. Domestic flights to Lukla enforce strict limits, so check the airline's current baggage rules.
