Gokyo Lakes trek: quick planning answers

3 min read

How high are the Gokyo Lakes?

Gokyo village sits at about 4,790 metres on the shore of the third lake, while the lakes themselves range from about 4,700 to 5,000 metres. Gokyo Ri, the viewpoint above the village, is about 5,357 metres.

How many days do I need?

Plan 11 to 14 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. Twelve to thirteen is the comfortable sweet spot, while Renjo La or Cho La add a day or two.

Is the Gokyo Lakes trek harder than Everest Base Camp?

It is similar in altitude but has shorter days. The Everest Base Camp trek is busier and longer, while Gokyo offers a quieter experience. Adding a high pass makes Gokyo more demanding.

Do I need a guide?

A guide is strongly advised, especially for Renjo La or Cho La. Rules on solo trekking change, so ask your operator at the time of booking.

Is Gokyo better than Everest Base Camp?

Many trekkers say so because of the lakes and the Gokyo Ri view, and the quieter trails. If your goal is to stand at the foot of Everest, base camp itself is the answer. Both are excellent.

Can I do Gokyo without crossing a pass?

Yes. The simplest version goes up and down the Gokyo valley, returning via Dole and Namche. It is shorter, safer and often more relaxed.

Is Gokyo suitable for first-time trekkers?

It can be done by a fit first-timer with enough days, but altitude is a real risk. A first Himalayan trek at lower altitude, such as Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp, is a gentler start.

When should I book?

For October and April, book two to three months ahead to secure lodges, flights and your preferred operator. Quieter months need less notice.

Can I see Everest from Gokyo?

Yes. From Gokyo Ri you see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu on a clear day. Everest looks smaller than from Kala Patthar because other peaks stand in front, but the panorama is spectacular.

How many nights do I need at Gokyo?

Two nights is ideal. The first helps you acclimatise and the second gives you a second chance for sunrise at Gokyo Ri or a walk to the fifth lake. One night is possible but leaves little margin.

Can I do the Gokyo Lakes trek in winter?

It is possible but extremely cold, with frozen lakes, snow on the passes and some lodges closed. It is for experienced, well-equipped trekkers with flexible plans.

What are the other treks I can combine with Gokyo?

Everest Base Camp via Cho La is the classic combination. You can also add Renjo La as a loop or extend to the Three Passes trek. Each adds days and altitude.

Do I need previous trekking experience?

Not necessarily, but experience at altitude helps. If this is your first trek, choose a longer schedule, a good guide and spare days.
