The best months for Gosaikunda are March to May and late September to November. Winter brings snow and ice on the pass, and the monsoon brings rain and leeches, though the lake is busy with pilgrims at Janai Purnima around August.
Two seasons for good views, one for faith
Gosaikunda has the same rhythm as most Himalayan treks: the clear weather comes in spring and autumn. What makes it unusual is the monsoon pilgrimage, which turns a normally wet season into the lake's busiest week. Your best month depends on what you want from the trip, so it helps to think of three different choices rather than a single ideal date.
Autumn, late September to November
This is the most reliable window. After the monsoon the air is washed and the horizon is sharp, so the lake is at its most photogenic and the Langtang range stands clearly behind the ridge. October is the busiest month and the warmest at lower altitudes. By late November the nights at the lake drop well below freezing and the water begins to ice at the edges.
Spring, March to May
Rhododendrons bloom on the lower climb from late March, and April has the best mix of warm days and clear mornings. Snow can still lie around the lakes in March and early April, which makes for beautiful scenery and slower walking. Haze builds through May, so distant peaks look softer by the end of the season.
Winter, December to February
Possible, but cold. Expect snow on the final ascent, frozen water pipes, and several lodges at the top closed or limited. The sky is often brilliantly clear, which is the reward. This season suits well-equipped trekkers with winter experience and a guide who knows the conditions.
Monsoon, June to August
Rain, cloud and leeches on the lower trail make this the hardest time for scenery. The exception is Janai Purnima in August, when thousands of pilgrims make the climb. If you choose it, you are going for the atmosphere and the ritual, and the visibility is secondary. Expect crowded lodges, shared rooms and food that arrives slowly.
How to choose
For views and comfort pick October or April. For fewer people pick late March or late November, and pack extra warm clothing. For the pilgrimage pick the week of Janai Purnima, book lodges early and carry a rain jacket. Whatever the month, plan one spare day for weather. See the itinerary for where to add it.
