Best time for the Great Himalaya Trail

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Spring and autumn are best for most sections. The east and centre get monsoon rain from June to September, while the far west, Dolpo and Limi are drier in summer. Winter closes most high passes.

Spring

April and May are best for many sections, with long days and flowers.

Autumn

October and November have clear skies and stable weather.

Rain shadow

Dolpo, Mustang and Limi are drier in the monsoon, so summer trips are possible there.

Winter

High passes close and most lodges shut.

Section timing

The east is best in spring and autumn. The west and Dolpo suit summer. Plan each section for its best window.

Daylight and cold

Autumn days are short and cold. Spring days are longer.
