Planning a Great Himalaya Trail section

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Plan a section with a licensed agency. Restricted-area permits, resupply points, flights and spare days all need arranging in advance. Allow extra days, carry insurance with evacuation cover and train for long trekking days.

Permits

Many sections cross restricted areas or national parks. Your agency arranges the permits.

Logistics

Plan supplies carefully. Some sections need food and fuel carried for many days.

Fitness

Train for weeks of long days at altitude. Previous high trekking experience is important.

Insurance

Choose a policy that covers trekking up to the highest point and helicopter evacuation.

Resupply and food

Plan food and fuel for remote stretches, with resupply points where villages exist. Your agency will plan supply drops.

Spare days

Add spare days for weather, landslides and passes closed by snow. A trip that has margin is a safer trip.

Plan it
