Helambu is a low to mid altitude trekking region just north of Kathmandu, home to the Yolmo people. The classic circuit starts near Sundarijal and is a good short trek in any season outside the monsoon.
The nearest proper trek to Kathmandu
Helambu is the region of forested ridges and Yolmo villages that lies north-east of the capital. The trek starts at Sundarijal, only an hour by road from the centre of Kathmandu, and within a couple of hours of walking you are in oak and rhododendron forest with the city behind you. The usual route is a five-day circuit: Sundarijal to Chisapani, Kutumsang, Tharepati, Tarke Ghyang and Sermathang. It is the nearest trek that still feels like a Himalayan journey.
The Yolmo and Tamang villages
Upper Helambu is the home of the Yolmo people, a Tibetan Buddhist community who are related to the Sherpas, while many of the lower villages are Tamang. Monasteries, prayer wheels and long mani walls line the paths. Tarke Ghyang, the largest Yolmo village on the route, has an old gompa and a quiet, medieval character. The traditional houses have carved windows and slate roofs.
Views and nature
From Tharepati, a windy saddle at around 3,690 m, the views run across to Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa and the Ganesh Himal. The forests below are home to monkeys, deer and many birds. The route passes through two national parks: Shivapuri Nagarjun at the start and Langtang further north.
An easy introduction to altitude
Most nights are spent between 2,100 and 2,700 m, with only the third night at Tharepati reaching high altitude. This makes Helambu a gentle choice for first-time trekkers and a good warm-up for people planning a bigger trek.
History note
In 2015 an earthquake and its aftershocks damaged several Helambu villages, and many monasteries and houses were rebuilt. Community-run lodges now welcome visitors, and the income helps local families.
