Altitude and Health

How hard is the Helambu trek?

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Helambu is easy to moderate. Days are four to six hours, the altitude is moderate and lodges are frequent, which makes it good for first-time trekkers.

Easy to moderate

Helambu is one of the easier treks in Nepal. The highest point, Tharepati, is below 3,700 m, the days are short and the lodges are well spaced. The main difficulty is the steepness of the first and third days.

Daily effort

Four to six hours of walking per day. The first day, the climb out of Sundarijal, is steep and hot in the afternoon. Day three also climbs steadily. The rest is mostly rolling or downhill.

Altitude

Mild. Some people notice a headache at Tharepati, but serious altitude illness is rare. If you feel unwell, descend to Tarke Ghyang.

Cold

Nights are cold at Tharepati and Kutumsang in winter. A warm sleeping bag and jacket are needed.

Who it suits

Beginners, families with older children, travellers short of time and anyone preparing for a longer trek.

Pacing yourself

Many beginners walk too fast on the first day. Keep a pace at which you can hold a conversation, take rest breaks every hour and drink water often. The climb out of Sundarijal is steep, and the afternoon can be hot.

Support options

A porter can carry your bag so that you walk freely with a day pack. A guide can add knowledge and safety. Both are affordable on this route.

Comparing with other short treks

Helambu is easier than Gosaikunda and gentler than the Annapurna foothill treks. The total ascent is moderate and the altitude is low. It is a good test of your fitness and your gear before a bigger trek.

Common issues

Blisters from new boots are the most common problem. Break in your boots, wear good socks and treat hot spots early. Dehydration on the first day is also common.

Preparation

Normal fitness and sturdy shoes are enough. Poles help on the descents. See permits and access.

Common questions

  • Is it suitable for beginners? Yes. It is among the easier treks near Kathmandu.
  • How cold does it get? Nights at Tharepati are below freezing in winter. Elsewhere it is mild.
  • How many days do I need? Five to seven days for the standard circuit.
