Visiting remote lakes in Nepal safely

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

A remote lake trek needs more planning than a main-trail trek. The lake is often above 4,000 m, lodging may be basic or absent, permits can be unclear, and the monsoon pilgrimage season is wet. Go with a licensed guide, acclimatise well and ask your agency for written details.

Altitude

Most lakes in this guide are at 4,000 m or higher. Spend nights at lower camps, drink plenty of water and descend if symptoms get worse.

Camping and lodging

Many routes have tents and basic shelters rather than lodges. At sacred lakes, food and rooms may only be sold at the festival. Ask exactly where you will sleep and what bedding you need.

Permits

Permit rules vary by district and conservation area and can be unclear for little-used routes. Ask your agency to confirm every permit in writing before booking.

Season

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the usual windows. Pilgrimage days fall in the monsoon, so go prepared for rain and slippery trails.

Respect for sacred water

Do not wash, swim or leave rubbish in sacred lakes unless local custom allows it. Follow your guide, keep voices low and leave offerings untouched. See our etiquette guide.
