Season and Weather

Best time for the Jomsom to Muktinath trek

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The valley lies in the rain shadow, so the window is wider than for most Nepal treks, but wind is a constant.

Autumn and spring

September to November and March to May give the clearest days and the most comfortable walking. October is busiest.

Monsoon

Rain is lighter here than elsewhere in Nepal, so the route is a popular monsoon option, though flights can be disrupted and cloud may hide the peaks.

Winter

Cold and dry, with very cold nights. Some lodges close. Muktinath can have snow.

Daily wind

Wind builds from late morning. Walk early.

Pilgrim seasons

Hindu pilgrims visit throughout the year, with larger numbers on festival days. The temple area can be crowded then.

Weather by month

  • March to May: warm days, strong wind, flowers in the lower valley.
  • June to August: monsoon cloud in the south, drier in Mustang; flights can be disrupted.
  • September to November: clearest weather, apple harvest, busiest season.
  • December to February: cold, dry and quiet; some lodges closed.

Festival timing

Hindu pilgrims visit throughout the year, with peaks on festival days. If you want a quieter visit, avoid major pilgrim dates; if you want atmosphere, ask your guide about upcoming festivals.

Planning tip

Because flights are weather-dependent, any month benefits from a spare day. In the monsoon, aim for the morning flight and expect delays.

Who should pick which season

  • First-timers who want comfort: October to November.
  • Photographers who like blossom and long light: April.
  • Anyone avoiding crowds: late May or the monsoon, with spare days for flights.
  • Winter walkers: carry serious warm clothing and accept closed lodges.

Pilgrims and timing

Most Hindu pilgrims visit in the dry seasons and around major festivals, when lodges and the temple complex can be busy. If you want a quiet experience of the temples, choose a weekday outside the main festival dates and visit at dawn.
