Best time to trek Langtang Valley: seasons month by month

4 min read

Langtang is one of the closest high-mountain treks to Kathmandu, which makes it flexible. It can be done in several seasons if you accept the trade-offs.

Autumn: September to November

Clear skies, stable weather and crisp mountain views make autumn the most popular season. The trails are dry, and the valley is at its most photogenic. Lodges are busiest in October, so book early for the upper villages.

Spring: March to May

Warm days and rhododendron blooms in the lower forest make spring a pleasant alternative. Clouds build up in the afternoon, so mornings are best for views. Snow may remain on the upper trail in March.

Monsoon: June to August

The lower valley is wet, leech-prone and prone to landslides, and clouds often cover the peaks. The upper valley is somewhat drier, but visibility is limited. It is a season for those who value solitude and green hills over views.

Winter: December to February

Winter is cold with short days, but the air can be very clear. Snow may cover the upper trail, and some lodges close. Experienced trekkers with warm gear can have a peaceful trip, but plans should be flexible.

A short guide

  • Best views and stability: October and November.
  • Flowers and warm days: April and May.
  • Fewest people: winter and monsoon.

Why the trek works in more than one season

Langtang's closeness to Kathmandu means that you can start with little notice and adapt to the weather. A road takes you to the trailhead in a day, so if the forecast looks poor you can postpone by a few days or choose a different region. This flexibility is rare in Nepal, where many treks depend on flights or distant roads. It is one reason why Langtang is a favourite for people with short or uncertain holidays.

What you see in each season

In autumn, you see crisp air, golden light on the terraced slopes and sharp views of Langtang Lirung and its neighbours. In spring, the forest in the lower valley bursts into colour with rhododendrons and flowering shrubs, and you may see wildlife such as langur monkeys. In winter, the valley turns quiet and snow can fall at the higher villages. During the monsoon, the lush green hills and waterfalls are beautiful but the clouds hide the peaks.

Making the most of short holidays

If you only have a week, plan to arrive in Kathmandu with a day to spare and avoid dates close to major festivals when buses and hotels are full. A morning start from Kathmandu allows you to reach the first night's village before dark. Keep one spare day at the end in case of road delays.

Tips

  • Check for landslides on the road before and after rain.
  • Carry a warm layer for Kyanjin Gompa even in spring.
  • Book lodges in advance during October and April.

Month by month in the valley

March brings the first rhododendron buds and lingering snow above Kyanjin. April and May are warm, green and busy. June to August is monsoon, with leeches in the lower forest and cloud over the peaks. September is still wet early in the month but clears fast. October and November are the classic months for sharp views. December and January are cold and quiet, with snow possible above Langtang village. February is cold but often clear.

Light for photographers

Early morning gives the best light on Langtang Lirung and the peaks above Kyanjin. In autumn the haze is lowest, which suits long-lens shots. In spring, flowering forest and soft light suit landscapes. Winter shots are crisp but demand warm batteries and patience.
