Best time to climb Lobuche East: seasons and conditions

3 min read

Lobuche East has the same seasonal pattern as the rest of the Khumbu: two main windows with calm, clear weather, separated by a wet summer and a cold winter.

Autumn: October and November

After the monsoon, the air is clear and the weather is often settled. October is the most popular month, so the trail and camps are busier. By late November, it is colder and windier, and daylight is shorter.

Spring: April and May

Spring offers warmer days and longer light. Snow can be good for climbing, but cloud and snow showers become more frequent as the monsoon approaches. Dust and haze can reduce views at lower levels.

Summer and winter

Monsoon cloud and heavy snow make summer unsuitable. Winter brings extreme cold and strong winds, making climbing difficult and uncomfortable.

What matters on the mountain

  • Snow cover on the rock and ice sections.
  • Wind speed on the ridge.
  • Temperature at high camp.
  • Crowds on the fixed ropes.

Choosing

Pick October for the highest chance of stable weather, accepting the crowds. Choose April for warmer conditions and a quieter feel. Late autumn and early spring are possible with more cold tolerance.

Flexibility

Plan a spare day for the mountain and another for flights. Summit day is chosen from the forecast.

Clear air and cold temperatures

Autumn often provides stable weather and spectacular views, but nights are very cold at base camp and high camp. Spring is slightly warmer, with a chance of cloud and wind. Whichever you choose, pack for severe cold and plan for changing conditions.

Conditions on the ridge

Snow cover, wind and rock conditions vary between seasons and even between weeks. Experienced guides read these and adjust timings. Trust their judgement and do not push for a summit if conditions are unsafe.

Planning your dates

Book early for popular dates, allow buffer days for flights and keep your plans flexible. A relaxed schedule increases your chances and your enjoyment.

Seasonal differences on the ridge

In autumn the ridge is dry and firm, with stable weather in October and cold nights in November. In spring, the snow may be softer and the weather more changeable. Both seasons are workable, but climbers should be prepared for severe cold and wind.

Crowds

Lobuche village is busy in peak season because it is on the Everest Base Camp trail. Lodges fill up, and base camp can host several teams. Booking early secures space, and arriving early in the day helps.

Plan around full moons

Some climbers choose dates near the full moon for easier night travel, though headlamps are still essential. Your guide may suggest timing based on the lunar cycle and forecasts.
