Lobuche East itinerary: schedule from Kathmandu to the summit

3 min read

Lobuche East is normally climbed after a trek along the Everest Base Camp route, so the first half follows well-known trails. The total is often around seventeen to twenty days, including flights.

A typical outline

  1. Kathmandu for preparation, permits and gear checks.
  2. Lukla flight and walk to Phakding.
  3. Namche Bazaar with a rest day.
  4. Tengboche and Dingboche, with a second acclimatisation day.
  5. Lobuche village and the approach to base camp.
  6. Base camp with a skills session on rock and ice.
  7. High camp above, depending on the plan.
  8. Summit day, returning to base camp or Lobuche village.
  9. Spare day for weather.
  10. Return trek to Lukla and flight to Kathmandu.

Options

Some programmes include Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar before the climb, which adds a few days and helps acclimatisation. Others begin the climb earlier, which shortens the trip but leaves less margin.

Spare days

Include at least one spare day for the climb and a buffer for flights. Weather delays are common in this region.

Why not rush

A gradual schedule improves safety and success rates. Compressing the itinerary tends to cause problems.

We can adjust the programme to your dates.

Why the early days matter

The early days through Namche, Tengboche and Dingboche allow your body to adapt before the climb. Short acclimatisation hikes to viewpoints are valuable, and they also give a first look at the peaks you will see from the top. Resist the urge to skip rest days.

Lobuche village and the base camp

Lobuche village sits at a high altitude and nights can be cold. Many groups combine a rest day here with skills practice, then continue to base camp. The camp is simple, with tents and a dining tent, and the focus turns to preparation for the climb.

After the summit

Return to Lobuche or Dingboche allows you to recover. The walk down is gentler and the air feels richer. If you have time, visiting Everest Base Camp on the same journey is a popular extension.

Building in flexibility

Weather, health and flights can disrupt plans. A spare day is the single best protection, and wise climbers use it without regret.

A sample plan in detail

A common plan lasts 17 to 19 days: arrival and rest in Kathmandu, flight to Lukla, nights at Phakding, Namche (two), Tengboche or Deboche, Dingboche (two), Lobuche village and base camp, then the climb, followed by a descent and return via Namche to Lukla. Variations include a visit to Everest Base Camp before or after the climb.

Acclimatisation days explained

Rest days are active. At Namche you walk up to a viewpoint and back down, and at Dingboche you hike toward Nangkartshang for a high point. These sessions teach your body to cope with altitude and let the guide assess your condition. Skipping them increases risk.

Using flexibility

  • Include at least one spare day before the summit window.
  • Be ready to shorten or lengthen the plan as weather allows.
  • Keep a spare day at the end for flights.
