Sunlit glacial valley and trail near Deurali on the Annapurna Base Camp route
Itinerary and Days

How many days does the Makalu Base Camp trek take?

2 min read

Most Makalu Base Camp itineraries run 18 to 23 days from Kathmandu back to Kathmandu. The trek itself is usually 16 to 20 days of walking from Tumlingtar and back, depending on the route and how many rest days are included. It is a long journey because the approach is long and the trail is remote, not because base camp is especially high.

What each length usually means

An 18 day plan is the practical minimum. It has only a day or two of rest and little spare time, and it suits experienced trekkers who have been above 4,500 m before. A 21 to 23 day plan, the length many operators sell, has a rest day before base camp, a spare day for weather and flights and time to enjoy the Barun valley. If you have a limited holiday, choose a different trek rather than shortening this one.

How the days are spent

  • Two days in Kathmandu before and after the trek.
  • One day to fly to Tumlingtar and start walking.
  • Seven to ten days to climb to the Barun valley.
  • One to two rest days before the highest camp.
  • One day to reach base camp.
  • Five to eight days to return to Tumlingtar and fly back.

Where extra days help most

The most valuable extra day is a rest day in the upper valley before base camp. A second useful buffer is a spare day at the start in case the Tumlingtar flight is delayed, and one at the end before your international flight. In the monsoon shoulder weeks, a spare day for landslides is also wise.

Why not shorten it

The trail has long ups and downs, and the remote camps depend on weather and porters. Rushing leaves no margin, and a delay can cost the base camp attempt. A relaxed 21 day plan is both safer and more enjoyable.

How to count your leave

Add a day to reach Kathmandu and a buffer day at the end. For a 21 day trek, expect to be away for about 23 to 25 days. If you travel from India, the journey to Kathmandu is short, so you can usually keep the leave to the lower end.
