Makalu Base Camp trek permits and entry rules

2 min read

The Makalu Base Camp trek passes through the Makalu Barun National Park and its buffer zone, so you need national park entry in addition to the usual trekking registration. Rules and fees can change, so confirm the current list with your operator before you pay. This page explains what is usually required and who arranges it.

What is usually required

  • A Makalu Barun National Park entry permit, checked at the park gate.
  • Trekking registration through a licensed agency, including the TIMS card where it applies.
  • Any local or buffer-zone entry that applies on the route at the time of travel.
  • A valid passport and passport-size photographs.

Who arranges them

A licensed operator buys the permits, registers you and provides copies. It saves time in Kathmandu and avoids mistakes. Ask for a written list of which permits are included, and check that the quote does not leave them out.

Guide and staff

Current rules in Nepal have moved toward requiring trekkers to travel with a licensed guide on many routes, and Makalu is remote enough that a guide is a safety necessity as well. Many operators also provide porters, a cook and kitchen staff for camping sections. Check what is included.

What to carry on the trail

Keep your permits in a waterproof pouch with phone photos as backup. Carry your passport on the trek, because it may be needed at checkposts, and you may be asked to show permits at the park gate and at local checkposts.

Fees

Fees differ by nationality and can be revised by the authorities. We do not list fixed amounts because outdated figures cause confusion. Ask for a written breakdown of permit fees and confirm what is included in your price.

Respecting the park

The park protects rare plants and animals. Carry out all rubbish, avoid disturbing wildlife, use fuel supplied by your crew instead of cutting wood and follow your guide's advice on campsites and water sources.
