Documents and money for Indian travellers on the Makalu Base Camp trek

2 min read

Indian citizens do not need a visa to enter Nepal, which simplifies planning. For a long and remote trek like Makalu, cash, identity documents and insurance matter more than entry rules, because there are no banks or ATMs on the route and help is far away.

Identity documents

Carry a valid passport, or the photo ID your operator confirms is accepted for Indian citizens at the time of travel. Keep the original in a waterproof pouch and carry copies and phone photos. Your operator needs clear copies to arrange permits.

Permits and fees

Your operator arranges national park entry, trekking registration and any local entry. Fees for Indian citizens may differ from those for other foreigners and can change, so confirm the current figures when you book. Bring passport-size photographs.

Money

  • Nepali rupees are used on the trail. Indian rupees are accepted in some places, but rules on notes can change, so confirm what is allowed with your operator.
  • Exchange or withdraw enough cash in Kathmandu, since there are no ATMs on the trek.
  • Carry small notes for tea, snacks and tips.

Insurance

Buy travel insurance that covers trekking to at least 5,000 m and helicopter evacuation, and check that it works in Nepal. Keep the policy number and emergency contacts with you and with your guide.

Getting to Kathmandu and the east

You can fly from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and other cities to Kathmandu. Eastern Nepal can also be reached by land from India, for example via Biratnagar, which may suit some travellers. Discuss options with your operator, and always keep a spare day for flights.

Food

Vegetarian meals are easy to arrange, and your cook can handle special diets if told in advance. Carry some familiar snacks, because menus at remote camps repeat.
