Lodges, camping and food on the Makalu Base Camp trek

2 min read

Makalu Base Camp is far less developed than Everest or Annapurna. Lower villages have simple lodges and home-stays, but higher up services thin out, and many operators use a mix of lodges and camping. Expect plain food, basic toilets and few comforts. This is part of the trek's appeal for people who want a wild and quiet route.

Lodges and home-stays

In the lower valleys you may sleep in simple lodges or in village houses. Rooms are small with basic beds and shared toilets. Some places have no electricity or only solar lights. Higher up, lodges may be seasonal, closed outside the main months or very basic.

Camping

Where lodges are not available, your crew sets up tents, a dining tent and a toilet tent. You sleep on a foam mat in a sleeping bag. Camps are cold at night, so bring a warm bag rated to low temperatures and a hot water bottle. Camping is quiet and gives you a closer connection to the valley.

Food

  • Dal bhat, rice, lentils and vegetables in lodges.
  • Noodle soup, pasta, potatoes, eggs and porridge from the camp kitchen.
  • Hot drinks, such as tea and soup, to help you drink more.

Fresh fruit and meat are limited. Bring snacks you like, because appetite changes at altitude and menus repeat.

Water

Your crew boils or treats water. Carry a bottle and purification tablets as a backup, and avoid drinking from streams without treating the water.

Showers, charging and signal

Hot showers are rare, and charging may be limited to solar chargers in the lower villages. Carry a power bank and a small solar panel. Mobile signal is patchy or absent. Tell family not to expect daily contact, and agree on a check-in plan with your guide.

Staying healthy

Wash your hands before meals, choose hot freshly cooked food and avoid raw salads. Carry rehydration salts and basic medicines. In the lower forest, wear long trousers and check for leeches in warm, wet months.
