Makalu Base Camp trek: quick logistics answers

1 min read

How do I get to the start?

Most groups fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and walk from there. A road route is possible but longer.

What is the luggage limit?

It is small, often around 15 kg including hand luggage. Pack light and store extra bags in Kathmandu. Confirm the limit with your operator.

What if my flight is cancelled?

Flights depend on weather. Keep a spare day, and ask your operator about road or rebooking options.

How much cash should I bring?

Bring enough Nepali rupees for the whole trek, since there are no ATMs. Your guide can suggest a daily amount.

Where can I leave extra luggage?

Most Kathmandu hotels store luggage while you are on the trek. Ask when you book.

Are tips expected?

Tips for guides and porters are customary. Agree an approach with your operator and carry cash for it.

Can I charge devices?

Charging is limited and may cost extra in the lower villages, and is rare higher up. Bring a power bank and a small solar charger.
