Both circuits loop around a major mountain massif and cross a high pass, but they feel quite different on the ground.
Remoteness and crowds
Manaslu is wilder and quieter, with fewer lodges and fewer trekkers. The Annapurna Circuit is better served, with more choice of accommodation and food, and more people on the trail. Roads have also changed parts of the Annapurna route, whereas Manaslu retains more of a trail feel, though roads are creeping in on its lower sections.
Permits and cost
Manaslu needs a restricted-area permit, charged by week, in addition to the conservation area ticket and TIMS. Annapurna requires only the conservation area ticket and TIMS. Both need a licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS. Manaslu therefore costs more in fees.
Difficulty
Manaslu is generally harder, with simpler lodges, longer remote stretches and a steeper descent on the far side of the pass. The Annapurna Circuit is more forgiving, with more services and options to use vehicles.
Culture and scenery
Manaslu moves from subtropical gorges to Tibetan Buddhist villages close to the border, with views of Manaslu itself. Annapurna offers a wider range of landscapes, from farmland to the arid Mustang side and a famous temple at Muktinath.

Tell us your time and experience and we will help you pick.
The experience of walking each route
On Manaslu you often walk for hours without meeting another group, and the villages feel remote and traditional. On the Annapurna Circuit, you meet other trekkers regularly, the lodges are plentiful and the trail passes through more developed villages. Neither is better in general. It depends on whether you want more solitude and challenge or more comfort and choice.
Time and flexibility
Both treks need around two weeks, but Annapurna can be shortened with vehicles, while Manaslu has fewer options. The permit and guide rules for Manaslu make it harder to improvise. If you like flexibility, Annapurna may suit you better. If you like a defined journey in a restricted area, Manaslu may appeal.
For first-timers
Many first-time trekkers start with other routes, but some choose Manaslu if they are well prepared and travelling with a good operator. Consider your health, previous experience, and tolerance for basic conditions. If you are uncertain, do a shorter trek first and decide later.
Decision points
- Do you want quiet trails or a social atmosphere?
- How important are comfort and variety of food?
- How much do you value having alternatives if plans change?
Cultural contrasts
Manaslu offers a more traditional Tibetan-influenced culture in the upper valleys, with monasteries, prayer walls and yak herders. The Annapurna Circuit passes through diverse cultures, with Hindu and Buddhist communities and the sacred site of Muktinath. Both are rich but different.
Road development
The Annapurna Circuit has been affected by road building, with jeeps on some sections. Manaslu has also seen roads reach higher, but is generally quieter. Ask about current conditions when you plan.
