Most Mera Peak climbs fly to Lukla and cross the Zatrwa La into the Hinku valley. Others start from Hongu or finish by flight from Lukla after crossing Amphu Labtsa.
Flight to Lukla
Fly from Kathmandu or Ramechhap in the morning. Weather can delay flights, so keep a spare day at both ends.
Crossing Zatrwa La
From Lukla the trail climbs over the Zatrwa La pass at about 4,600 m and drops into the Hinku valley. The pass day is long and steep, with fine views toward Mera and Kusum Kanguru.
The Hinku valley
Camps at Kothe, Thangnak and Khare follow the river toward the peak. See the Hinku valley guide for details of each stage.
Return
Descend the same way or return by another pass. Helicopter evacuation is possible but weather dependent.
Why the route matters
The Zatrwa La route is scenic but high and demanding early on. An alternative is to fly or drive to a lower start, such as Chutanga or Hongu. Your operator will choose a route based on season and group fitness. Ask about the plan for bad weather and landslides.
Returning from the Hinku
Some teams return by the same route; others cross another pass to Lukla. The return gives time to rest and enjoy the scenery. Keep a spare day before your international flight.
Understanding the route options
Your operator may offer the classic Lukla to Hinku route or a longer variant via Hongu or Amphu Labtsa. The longer routes are more remote and require more time, but they offer a richer experience. Choose based on your time, experience and appetite for adventure.
Packing the right way
Use soft duffels for porters, keep valuables with you and carry a daypack with water, snacks and layers. Label every bag and weigh it before departure to avoid problems at the airport.
Buffer
Keep spare days in Kathmandu after the climb. Flight queues can last more than a day.
Arriving at Lukla
Mera teams usually fly to Lukla and walk south into the Hinku valley. Confirm porter support and flights.
Choosing your start
Most teams fly to Lukla and cross the Zatrwa La, about 4,600 m, into the Hinku valley. Some use Paiya or other starts to avoid the pass. Ask which route fits your timeline.
