The best time for the Poon Hill trek is spring, from March to April, and autumn, from October to November. Both seasons deliver clear mornings, stable weather and trails in good condition. The trek is short, so you can often choose your dates based on views and flowers rather than worrying about long-range forecasts.
Spring: March and April
Spring is the favourite among many trekkers because the forest above Ulleri is in bloom. Red and pink rhododendrons cover the hills, and the trail is lined with colour. Mornings are usually clear, while afternoon haze becomes more common as May approaches. Nights at Ghorepani are cold, but days are comfortable.
Autumn: October and November
Autumn offers the sharpest mountain views because the monsoon has cleared the dust from the air. The weather is dry and stable. This is the busiest season, especially around festivals, so lodges in Ghorepani can be crowded and sunrise at Poon Hill can feel like a stadium. Book early and leave the lodge a little ahead of the crowd.
Winter: December to February
Winter brings the clearest skies and fewest trekkers, but also freezing nights and, after snowfall, slippery trails. Lodges are cosy but cold, and the viewpoint can be below zero before dawn. Pack warm layers and gaiters, and accept that a snowstorm may change plans.
Monsoon: June to September
Heavy rain, cloud-covered views, leeches in the lower forest and landslide risk make the monsoon a poor choice for the sunrise experience. Waterfalls and green slopes are beautiful, but visibility is unreliable.
How to choose
- Choose March or April for flowers and warmer days.
- Choose October or early November for crisp air and clear views.
- Avoid peak festival weekends if you dislike crowds.
- Plan for a spare day if the forecast looks unsettled.
Weather tips
Mornings are nearly always the clearest part of the day. If cloud covers the view on your first dawn, consider a second attempt on the way back where your route allows. Layers matter more than any other single item, because you can be hot while climbing and cold within minutes of stopping.
Month by month
January and February are cold and clear, with snow possible near Ghorepani. March is the start of spring, with early rhododendron and warm days. April is the peak of bloom and the busiest spring month. May is warm and hazy with early monsoon clouds near the end. June to September is monsoon. October is the best month for clear views. November is cool, crisp and quiet toward the end. December brings very cold mornings and the clearest skies.
Festivals and holidays
Major Nepali and Indian festivals in autumn and school holidays in spring bring many trekkers. Lodges at Ghorepani can be packed, so book early or choose dates outside the peak. In exchange you get a lively atmosphere and the chance to meet people from many countries.
What to wear by month
- March to May: layers, a light jacket and rain protection.
- October and November: warm layers and a down jacket for mornings.
- December to February: thermal layers, a warm sleeping bag and gloves.
Photography by season
For flowers, choose April. For clear mountain skylines, choose October or November. For dramatic winter light and few people, choose December or February. Early morning is always best, regardless of the month.
