The Annapurna region offers several excellent treks from Pokhara, and three of the most popular for first-timers are Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp. They differ in length, effort and style, so the best choice depends on how many days you have and what you want from the mountains.
Poon Hill
Four to five days, the easiest and shortest option, with a maximum altitude of about 3,210 m. It delivers sunrise views over Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range and a mix of forest and village life. It is ideal for beginners, families and people with limited time. Crowds are heaviest in spring and autumn.
Mardi Himal
Five to seven days with a high point at the View Point of about 4,200 m, and Mardi Himal Base Camp a little higher at about 4,500 m. It follows a ridge with close views of Machhapuchhre and fewer trekkers than the popular routes. Accommodation is simpler and the climb is steeper in places. It suits those who want a quieter, more adventurous trek.
Annapurna Base Camp
Nine to twelve days with a high point of about 4,130 m. It travels into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, with a full alpine amphitheatre at the end. It requires more time and fitness, and has avalanche awareness in winter and spring. It is the most rewarding option for those who want a classic Himalayan journey.
Quick comparison
- Time: Poon Hill is shortest, Mardi Himal is mid, ABC is longest.
- Effort: Poon Hill is easy to moderate, Mardi Himal moderate, ABC moderate to demanding.
- Crowds: Poon Hill and ABC are busiest, Mardi Himal is quieter but growing.
- Lodges: Poon Hill is the most comfortable, Mardi Himal the simplest.
Making the decision
If you have four or five days and want the easiest option, choose Poon Hill. If you have six or seven days and want ridge views and quiet, choose Mardi Himal. If you have ten days or more and want the classic sanctuary, choose ABC. You can also combine Poon Hill with ABC for the best of both.
Which is best for photographers
Poon Hill gives broad panoramas at sunrise, Mardi Himal gives intimate portraits of Machhapuchhre, and ABC gives dramatic alpine amphitheatre scenes. A photographer with time might do all three. With one chance, choose according to your favourite subject.
Which is best for families
Poon Hill, because of the shorter length, easier trails and comfortable lodges. Annapurna Base Camp is possible for older children with a long schedule, while Mardi Himal's basic lodges and steep ridge make it less suitable for young children.
Which is best for solitude
Mardi Himal, especially on weekdays or off-peak months. Poon Hill and ABC can be crowded in peak season. Visiting in shoulder weeks, such as late March or early December, gives quieter trails on all three.
A combined itinerary idea
Start with Poon Hill for four days, return to Pokhara for a rest day, then trek Mardi Himal for five days. This pairing gives variety and avoids repeating terrain, and it fits roughly into two weeks including travel. If you add ABC instead, plan for three weeks.
