The best months for Rara Lake are April to May and September to November. Winter brings snow, and the monsoon brings rain and cloud that can disrupt flights.
Two clear seasons
Rara has the same pattern as most of Nepal, but the cold is more severe because of the northern latitude and the open terrain. The best windows are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).
Spring, March to May
Rhododendrons flower on the slopes from April, and the lake reflects the surrounding hills on still mornings. Early March can still be snowy on the passes, and nights are cold. May is warm but cloudier.
Autumn, September to November
This is the most dependable season, with clear skies and stable weather. October is best. Nights near the lake are below freezing by November, and ice can form at the edges.
Monsoon, June to August
The route is wet, the leeches appear in the lower forest, and flights to Jumla can be cancelled. The lake is green, and a local festival is held at full moon in the season, but visibility and comfort are poorer.
Winter, December to February
Heavy snow closes the passes and the lake can freeze. Not recommended for most travellers.
Landscape through the seasons
In spring the slopes of rhododendron and the new leaves of the forest make the lake look softer. In autumn the grasses are golden and the sky is deep blue. In winter the lake may freeze and snow covers the ridge, which is beautiful but dangerous without winter equipment.
Practical advice
Check flight schedules before you book the rest of the trip. Jumla flights are weather dependent, so keep your international departure flexible. Bring layers for a wide range of temperatures between day and night.
Choosing a month
For colour choose April. For clarity choose October. Always keep a spare day for the flight. See the access guide.
Why Rara is quiet
The lake is remote and visitor numbers are small. Spring and autumn bring clear skies and pleasant walking weather.
Colours and cold
Spring brings rhododendrons and autumn brings crisp views. Winter is cold, and monsoon rain makes trails slippery.
