Rara Lake: facts, height and what makes it special

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Rara Lake lies at about 2,990 m in Rara National Park in the far-west district of Mugu. It is generally described as the largest lake in Nepal, and it is remote, quiet and reached by a flight and a gentle trek.

Nepal's largest lake, in its smallest national park

Rara lies in the far north-west of Nepal, in Mugu district, and covers around 10.8 square kilometres at an altitude of roughly 2,990 m. It is the largest freshwater lake in the country and is thought to be about 167 m deep. The surrounding Rara National Park is the smallest of Nepal's parks, but the lake alone makes it a major destination for travellers who want a quiet alternative to the busy valleys.

The setting

Dense forests of pine, spruce, juniper and rhododendron surround the lake, and in good weather snow peaks appear behind the ridge. The water reflects the hills so clearly that locals say it changes colour with the sky. Wildlife includes the Himalayan black bear, musk deer and red panda in the forests, plus a rich bird list. Fishing is controlled, and pollution is deliberately kept low by the park rules.

Culture and history

The surrounding region was part of the medieval Khasa kingdom, which had its capital at Sinja in the Jumla area. The trek passes remains and old villages from that time. There is also a small Hindu temple on the shore, and local people hold a gathering at the lake on the full moon in the monsoon season. Details vary by village, so ask your guide.

Why it is so quiet

Rara can only be reached by flying to Jumla or Nepalgunj, or by a very long road. Few trekkers arrive each year compared with Everest or Annapurna, so lodges are simple and the trails are rarely crowded. That is a large part of the appeal.

Trek or short visit

There are two ways to see Rara. A short visit flies into the airstrip close to the lake and walks around it in two or three days. The full trek leaves from Jumla, crosses ridges and passes, and takes about ten days. See the itinerary for the longer route.

Wildlife and birds

The forests around the lake support red panda, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, Himalayan tahr, leopard and a rich bird list that includes the Himalayan monal, Nepal's national bird. Sightings are never guaranteed, but early morning walks along the shore give the best chance. The lake also has snow trout and other fish, and fishing is regulated by the park.

Local etiquette

Do not swim in the lake, wash with soap in it or throw rubbish. The water is considered sacred and the park authorities enforce strict cleanliness. Carry waste with you and respect the quiet.
