Season and Weather

Best time to cross Teri La

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

A pass at this height has a short season.

Autumn

The most reliable window is late September to mid-October, as in published departures.

Spring

Possible in some years, but snow may linger at the pass.

Monsoon and winter

Not advised. Rain, cloud and landslides affect the approaches, and winter snow is deep.

Checking conditions

Your guide should seek current information from recent parties and local sources before the crossing.

Why the window is narrow

The pass lies above 5,000 m, and snow, wind and cold are factors for much of the year. In autumn, the monsoon has ended and the weather is more stable, but days shorten quickly. In spring, snow may linger. Planning around these limits, and keeping a spare day, is the key to a safe crossing.

What to watch for

  • Fresh snowfall in the days before the crossing.
  • Strong wind or rapidly changing cloud.
  • Very low temperatures overnight.
  • Unusual silence or warmth that may precede a storm.

Flexibility

Even in the best season, conditions can change. Be ready to wait a day or two, or to change route. A flexible schedule is the most valuable safety tool.

Month-by-month for the crossing

  • April: snow likely on the pass.
  • May: rare window; check conditions.
  • June to August: monsoon; not advised.
  • September: improving late in the month.
  • October: the main window for published departures.
  • November: short days and early snow.
  • December to March: not feasible.

Common questions

When can I cross Teri La?

Mainly autumn, around late September to mid-October.

Is spring possible?

Sometimes, but snow can remain.

Can I cross in winter?

No.

Why autumn tends to win

The post-monsoon months bring clearer skies and firmer trails, which suits a remote pass crossing. Daytime visibility is good, but nights are cold, so pack accordingly.

Planning a flexible window

Weather on high passes changes quickly. Build a spare day or two into the schedule and let your guide judge the crossing conditions on the day.

Day length and cold

Late autumn days are shorter and nights colder. Plan an early start for the crossing.

Snow timing

Early snow can close the pass, so aim for stable windows and allow weather days.
