Permits and Rules

Teri La permits and planning

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Because the trek passes through two restricted areas, the paperwork is more involved.

Permits

Guide and crew

A licensed guide is required, and camping needs cook, kitchen staff and porters.

Timing

Apply well ahead, at least several weeks, and confirm fees and dates.

Custom trip

This is a custom itinerary for us. Send an enquiry with your dates and experience.

Documents and timing

Provide passport scans and travel dates early. Restricted-area permits depend on the exact dates and route, and changes can be complicated. Confirm that your permits cover all days, including spare days.

Cost considerations

A camping expedition costs more than a lodge-based trek because of crew, equipment and logistics. Ask for an itemised quote and compare what is included.

Insurance

Ensure your policy covers trekking above 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation, and that it allows camping and remote areas. Read the exclusions carefully.

A checklist for enquiry

  • Your nationality and passport validity.
  • Preferred dates and flexibility.
  • Your high-altitude experience and any medical conditions.
  • Whether you want a private or group departure.
  • Your budget range and comfort expectations for camping.

How we can help

Teri La is a custom itinerary for us. Send an enquiry with the checklist above and we will reply with a route, a day plan and an itemised quote, or tell you honestly if the trip is not a good fit for your experience and dates.

Common questions

How many permits do I need?

Nar Phu, Upper Mustang, ACAP and TIMS.

Can I go without an agency?

No.

How early should I apply?

At least several weeks before travel.

Allow time for the permit process

Send documents early so your operator can arrange permits without a rush. Missing paperwork causes delays.

Plan around the season

Choose a season with stable weather. A spare day makes the crossing safer.

Restricted regions

Both Nar Phu and Upper Mustang require restricted-area permits, so ensure paperwork covers both.
