Getting to the Tilicho Lake: flights, roads and transfers

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Tilicho Lake is reached from Manang. Most trekkers drive from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Besisahar or higher, walk to Manang and then make a side trip to the lake.

To Besisahar

The drive from Kathmandu takes six to eight hours and from Pokhara four to five. Jeeps continue to Chame or Manang on rough roads.

Manang to Tilicho Base Camp

From Manang the path goes via Khangsar to Tilicho Base Camp at about 4,150 m, a walk of one to two days. Landslide sections on the old route have made the Shree Kharka path common.

The lake day

The lake is a long climb of about three to four hours from base camp, with a return in the afternoon. Start early to avoid afternoon wind.

Finishing

After the lake you can return to Manang and cross Thorong La, or cross Mesokanto La to Jomsom. See the Mesokanto La guide.

Route status and safety

Landslides on the old trail have forced route changes. Before you leave Manang, ask your guide or the lodge owner about the current condition. Cross exposed sections early in the day and one at a time. Do not take risks on loose slopes after heavy rain.

What to carry

Carry enough water, snacks and warm clothes for the full day to the lake. There are few places to buy supplies between Tilicho Base Camp and the lake. Start at dawn and plan to be back before the wind rises.

Buffer

Add spare days for landslides and weather. Check route status before you start.

Landslide-prone sections

The Tilicho trail crosses steep slopes that can shed rock after rain. Move steadily through the exposed parts, avoid stopping underneath loose slopes, and follow your guide’s advice on timing.

A sensible day count

Allow extra days around the lake. Weather, altitude and trail conditions can change quickly, and a flexible schedule lets you choose the safest window for the crossing.

Local transport tips

Share jeeps where possible, carry water and snacks, and wear a mask in dusty stretches.

From Manang to the lake

Most trekkers leave Manang for Khangsar and then to Tilicho Base Camp, about 4,150 m. From there the lake is a steep climb of about three to four hours.
