The best months for Tilicho Lake are April to May and October to November. The route is in the Manang rain shadow, so the monsoon is less severe, but landslides remain a risk.
December to February
Very cold, with snow. The lake is frozen. Not recommended.
March and April
Spring warms. Snow can remain at the lake in March. April is clear and busy.
May
Warm and stable with good views. Late snow melts.
June to September
Monsoon, but Manang is drier. Landslides can affect the approach road. Late September improves.
Altitude and cold
At Tilicho Base Camp, night temperatures fall to minus 10 in October and lower in winter. At the lake, wind chill can be severe. A good sleeping bag, down jacket and warm accessories are essential in any season.
Landslide risk by season
Heavy rain in the monsoon loosens slopes, and late-season storms can do the same. Spring and autumn are drier. If heavy rain falls before your trek, ask about route conditions.
A note on weather windows
Weather in the Manang valley often follows a pattern: clear mornings and afternoon wind. The best time to be at Tilicho Lake is mid morning, when the water is calm and the light is strong. Plan to be on the trail by dawn so that you are not caught by afternoon winds on the exposed route.
When to avoid the route
After periods of heavy rain or snow, the landslide sections become unstable. Avoid the route in the days following a storm and ask local people for advice. Flexible schedules save lives here.
October and November
The prime season. Clear skies and cold nights. November is cold at the lake. See the best time guide.
Reading the weather
Check forecasts at Manang and listen to your guide. Wind and cloud can build quickly in the afternoon.
Best chance of clear views
Autumn mornings usually bring the clearest views. Start early to cross the exposed section before the wind picks up.
Landslides and rain
After rain, slopes on the Tilicho trail may slide. Check conditions with your guide and avoid the route in heavy weather.
