Upper Mustang is one of the more expensive Nepali treks to arrange, mostly because of the daily restricted-area permit. We do not publish a single fixed price here because the total depends on your choices, but we can show you what moves the number.
The permit
The restricted-area permit is charged at USD 50 per person per day, according to the figures supplied to us. A longer stay in the zone raises the total in a direct, predictable way. TIMS and the Annapurna Conservation Area entry fee are added on top. Rates can change, so confirm them before booking.
Transport
Flying from Pokhara to Jomsom costs more than going by road. A private jeep to Lo Manthang costs more than a shared seat. Mixed plans, with walking on the best sections, usually fall in between.
Group size
Costs such as guides, vehicles and sometimes porters are shared, so larger groups pay less per head. A solo traveller pays more because the guide and transport are not divided.
Lodging and meals
Basic lodges are modest, while better rooms in Lo Manthang or lodges with attached bathrooms add to the bill. Meals cost more as you go north because supplies travel farther.
Comparing quotes
- Ask whether permits, TIMS and entry fees are included.
- Check how many days of the permit are in the plan.
- Confirm whether the flight to Jomsom is included.
- Ask what happens if weather adds days.
Send your dates and group size and we will prepare a clear quote that lists each item.
How your choices change the price
The biggest levers are the number of days, the mode of transport and the group size. A trip that mixes flights, jeeps and walking costs differently from a fully walking trek, and a private departure with a dedicated vehicle is more expensive than a shared trip. A longer plan adds both permit days and guide days. Ask your operator to price the options so that you can compare.
Hidden or overlooked items
Check whether flights between Pokhara and Jomsom are included, whether meals and hotels in Pokhara and Kathmandu are covered, and whether tips, drinks and personal expenses are extra. Also ask about the cost of any excursions in Lo Manthang, such as day trips to monasteries, and whether entry fees are included.
Value for money
The cheapest quote may lack insurance, safety margin or fair wages, and extras added later can erase any savings. A fair price reflects the cost of permits, transport, lodging, guide and porter wages and some contingency for delays. Discuss the details openly and ask for a written itinerary.
Questions to ask
- Which permits and fees are included in the quote?
- How are weather delays handled and who pays for the extra days?
- Is there a cancellation or change fee?
Costs unique to Mustang
The restricted-area permit, vehicle hire, flights to Jomsom and the guide requirement drive costs. Remote logistics and limited lodges also add to the price. Comparing detailed itineraries and inclusions helps you see value.
Extra spending
Allow for gifts, donations at monasteries, tips, extra nights and snacks. Carry enough Nepali rupees, since ATMs are unavailable in Upper Mustang.
