Is altitude a problem?
Yes. Most of the trek is spent at high elevation, so pace yourself and drink plenty of water.
How cold are the nights?
Cold, even in warmer months. A warm sleeping bag helps.
Is it very windy?
Yes, usually in the afternoon. Start early and carry a windproof layer.
Do I need sun protection?
Absolutely. The sun is intense and the air is dry. Carry sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
Is the water safe to drink?
Treat all water by boiling, filtering or purification tablets.
Can I use cards or ATMs?
Not reliably. Bring enough cash for the whole trip.
Is there mobile coverage?
It is patchy. Expect no signal in some villages.
Can I charge devices?
Usually, for a fee, using solar power. A power bank is helpful.
What footwear is best?
Sturdy, broken-in boots. Gaiters help keep dust out.

Tell your guide straight away. Rest, hydrate, and descend if symptoms worsen.
What helps with a dry throat and cracked lips?
Drink warm fluids regularly, use lip balm with sun protection, suck on lozenges and breathe through a buff over your mouth on dusty days. A saline nasal spray can ease dryness. If a cough becomes persistent or you develop a fever, tell your guide.
How do I protect my camera from dust?
Keep it in a padded bag when not in use, change lenses in a sheltered place and use a cover or plastic bag in strong wind. Wipe the lens gently with a microfibre cloth. Avoid exposing sensors to dust, and carry a blower brush.
What if there is no hot water for a shower?
Showers are limited, and solar water may be cold. Use wet wipes and wash key areas with a small amount of warm water. Plan showers for the warmest part of the day, and accept that a shower is a luxury in remote areas.
Are trekking poles useful?
Yes. They help on loose gravel, steep descents and river crossings, and they reduce stress on knees. Choose adjustable poles with comfortable grips, and practise using them before the trek.
What can I do about sleeping badly?
Keep your evening routine consistent, drink enough water, avoid caffeine late in the day and keep warm. Earplugs and an eye mask help in shared lodges. If you wake with a headache or breathlessness, tell your guide in the morning.
What should I do about the dust?
Wear a buff or mask, protect your eyes and cover your camera. Wash your face and hands regularly.
Can I bring a drone?
Drones are restricted in many areas. Ask your operator and respect local rules.
How do I keep my skin from cracking?
Use moisturiser, lip balm and sun cream. Drink plenty of water.
What if I get a nosebleed?
Dry air can cause nosebleeds. Sit up, pinch your nose and breathe through your mouth. Seek help if bleeding persists.
Are there medical posts?
Facilities are limited. Carry a first-aid kit and personal medicines, and consider insurance with evacuation cover.
