Yala Peak in Langtang and Island Peak in Khumbu are two of the most popular trekking peaks for first-time climbers. They are both around 5,500 to 6,200 m, but they are different in height, access and technical demand. Choosing between them depends on time, budget, experience and the kind of trip you want.
Height and difficulty
Yala Peak, at about 5,500 m, is lower and generally easier. The final section is a modest snow slope, and many guides regard it as one of the gentler Himalayan summits. Island Peak, at about 6,190 m, is higher and has a steeper headwall and a glacier crossing. It demands more skill and better acclimatisation.
Access and travel
Yala is reached by road from Kathmandu, with no flight needed. This avoids Lukla weather delays and reduces cost. Island Peak requires a flight to Lukla and a longer walk through the Khumbu valley, which also gives views of Ama Dablam and Everest.
Time and cost
Yala usually takes 11 to 14 days, while Island Peak takes 16 to 20 days. A shorter trip usually costs less, which makes Yala good for people with limited time or budget.
Scenery
Yala offers Langtang valley scenery, with forests, yak pastures and Tamang and Tibetan culture. Island Peak offers the iconic Khumbu landscape, Sherpa villages and the option to visit Everest Base Camp. Both are beautiful, but in different ways.
Which first
- Choose Yala if this is your first peak, if you have around two weeks or if you want a lower-cost trip.
- Choose Island Peak if you want a bigger summit and are comfortable with higher altitude and more technical climbing.
- Do both over time if you want to build skills step by step.
