Discover the extraordinary beauty of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, a spectacular Himalayan adventure that has welcomed trekkers since 1991. Far from Nepal's busier trekking routes, this remarkable journey takes you through pristine mountain landscapes, traditional villages and authentic Tibetan-influenced cultures along the Nepal-Tibet border.

From lush river valleys and dense forests to remote alpine settlements and breathtaking Himalayan panoramas, every day reveals a new side of Nepal's natural and cultural heritage. The highlight is crossing the dramatic Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), where magnificent views of snow-capped peaks reward your efforts.

As a restricted trekking region, Manaslu requires special permits and an authorized trekking arrangement, helping preserve its unique environment and cultural traditions. Ideal for trekkers seeking a less-crowded alternative to Nepal's popular trails, the Manaslu Circuit offers an unforgettable blend of adventure, cultural discovery and mountain scenery. Proper acclimatization and preparation are essential for this high-altitude journey.

Our full Everest Base Camp packing checklist covers every item with practical advice. You can also download the packing list as a PDF to print or keep on your phone.

If something is missing when you reach Kathmandu, you can buy or rent almost any trekking gear there at reasonable prices. Buy your hiking boots before you travel, though, and break them in, because a good fit matters more than anything else you carry.

A few practical points before you pack:

  • We give you a duffel bag in Nepal to repack your gear into. Your porter carries it for you.
  • Bring a small day pack for what you need during the walk: water, camera, sunscreen and extra layers.
  • You can leave any extra luggage at your Kathmandu hotel while you trek.
  • The Lukla flight allows 10 kg (22 lbs) of checked luggage plus 5 kg (11 lbs) of carry-on.
  • Keep your passport, medication and other valuables in your carry-on for the Lukla flight.
  • If you would rather not buy bulky gear, you can rent a sleeping bag and a down jacket from us. Guests from outside India pay $20 for the sleeping bag and $15 for the jacket. Indian guests pay INR 1,200 for each.

How does it differ from the 18-day camping trek?

It uses teahouses throughout and fewer days. The camping listing uses tents and extra rest days.

What is the route?

Soti Khola, Machha Khola, Jagat, Dyang, Namrung, Samagaon (two nights), Samdo, Dharmashala, Bimthang, Dharapani and the road to Kathmandu.

What is the highest point?

Larkya La at 5,106m. The facts box lists 5,215m, so treat it as about 5,100 to 5,200m.

Larkya La and difficulty

How hard is the crossing?

Day 12 from Dharmashala to Bimthang is one of the toughest days: a very early start, a long climb and a steep, loose descent.

How is acclimatisation handled?

An extra night at Samagaon, short days to Samdo and Dharmashala. A 15-day plan is tight, so do not hurry.

What if snow blocks the pass?

The crossing can be delayed or cancelled. Allow spare days, and extra days are INR 6,000 each.

Do I need special fitness?

Yes. Plan several months of hill training.

Permits, transport and season

Which permits are needed?

Restricted-area special permits, processed in Kathmandu on Day 2, plus the Manaslu and Annapurna conservation permits and TIMS. They are included, and we need your passport scan in advance.

How do we get there?

A local bus to Soti Khola, and on the return a jeep from Dharapani to Besisahar followed by a bus to Kathmandu.

Is there a flight?

No. The page also mentions a Lukla baggage allowance, which does not apply to this trek.

When is the best time?

March to June and September to November, per the facts box. The FAQ also lists February to May and September to December.

Where do we stay?

Teahouses throughout. The night before the pass may be a basic lodge or tent.

Costs

What is included?

Airport transfers, three Kathmandu nights, lodging, a guide, porters, permits, taxes, a first aid kit and a farewell dinner. The page says all meals are included, but the terms treat some meals as extra, so confirm with us.

What is extra?

Visa, gear rental, tips, bottled water and snacks.

Insurance, safety and team

Do you sell insurance, and what should my policy include?

We do not sell it, so you arrange your own. It should include cover up to 5,200m, hospital treatment and rescue by helicopter. Email the policy before departure, and read the insurance section of our terms.

How is a medical evacuation handled?

The guide decides whether you walk down or fly, then our Kathmandu office books the helicopter and talks to your insurer. A flight can cost USD 5,000 or more. Ask the hospital for a written report for your claim.

Are the guides and porters your own staff?

They work for our Nepal operator, Himalayan Wonders Adventure Pvt. Ltd., which holds the licences and carries responsibility on the ground. See the team page for the people behind it.

Money, booking and changes

Can I pay by card?

Not in India, where we only take bank transfer or UPI. Overseas guests can pay the deposit online by card (4.5% fee) or by transfer. In Nepal the balance can be paid by card, but that adds 13%, so most guests bring cash in a major currency.

Can I get my deposit back?

Half comes back if you ask within 30 days of booking. Beyond that, keep it as credit for up to 365 days on any of our trips. It is lost only if you neither arrive nor tell us.

What if I need to postpone?

Tell us at least 14 days ahead, and 6 weeks ahead for free changes. You can do it repeatedly, paying only any price increase for the new date.

Is there a refund if I stop the trip?

Unused days and services are not refundable because the team has already been committed. We arrange your return, but extra costs are yours. Ask your insurer about trip-curtailment cover.

What if nobody else books my date?

There is no single supplement when you join a group. If you are the only booking on a fixed departure, a Solo Support Fee of INR 1,500 per day covers a dedicated porter, and it is waived if other guests join. We tell you at booking or as soon as it arises.
