How hard is the Annapurna Base Camp trek?

3 min read

Annapurna Base Camp is a moderate trek that most reasonably fit people can complete. There is no technical climbing, and the maximum altitude of about 4,130 m is lower than on the major Everest and Manaslu routes. The difficulty lies in endurance, not skill.

What makes it tiring

  • Stairs: thousands of stone steps, especially on the climb to Ghorepani and the stretches around Chhomrong, which are hard on knees.
  • Repeated ups and downs: the trail drops to rivers and climbs out again many times.
  • Weather: rain on the lower trail and cold near the sanctuary.
  • The last section: the upper valley is narrow, and in poor weather it can be exposed to avalanche and rockfall after heavy snow.

Altitude

The altitude is real, even though it is lower than other treks. Machapuchare Base Camp and the sanctuary sit above 3,700 m, and some people feel headaches and poor sleep there. Ascend steadily, drink fluids and do not climb if you have worsening symptoms.

Fitness needed

Regular walking or hiking, with some stair climbing, is the best preparation. Aim for the ability to walk five to six hours a day on consecutive days. Training with a daypack and trekking poles reduces the pain on the long descents.

Who it suits

It is a good choice for first-time trekkers, families with teenagers, and older trekkers in good health who want a mountain destination without extreme altitude. It also works for experienced trekkers who want a shorter trip.

Making it easier

Choose a slower itinerary with extra days, use a porter for your main bag, break in your boots, and travel outside the monsoon. Listen to your guide on weather and avalanche conditions near the sanctuary, because the upper section can be closed after snowfall.

The steps, not the height

The most common complaint about Annapurna Base Camp is not altitude but the thousands of stone steps, especially around Chhomrong and in the sections leading up to Bamboo and Dovan. They are hard on knees and thighs, and the climbs and descents repeat more than once. Good trekking poles, well-fitted boots and a slow pace help. Training with stair climbing before you go is one of the best forms of preparation for this trek.

Weather and conditions

Conditions in the Sanctuary change quickly. A sunny morning can turn into cold, cloud and snowfall by the afternoon, and the trail may be icy or snow covered in spring and winter. Guides watch avalanche risk on the upper section and may change plans if necessary. Carry waterproofs and warm clothing even if the lower valley is warm, and be prepared to wait a day if the guide advises it.

How people feel at the end

Most trekkers describe the final arrival at the Sanctuary as emotional, with a ring of peaks all around and a sense of having entered a huge natural amphitheatre. The sunrise on Annapurna I from base camp is a favourite memory. It is also a time to take care, because many people feel the altitude here for the first time. Keep warm, drink enough water and rest well.

Preparing in simple steps

  • Walk hills or stairs with a loaded daypack for several weeks.
  • Break in your boots on long walks.
  • Pack layers for cold nights and wet weather.
  • Allow a spare day in the schedule for weather.
