Dorje Lakpa, about 6,966 m, belongs to the Jugal Himal, a range north-east of Kathmandu that lies between Langtang and the Helambu hills. It is seen best from the south and west.
The Jugal Himal
The Jugal Himal is a lesser-known range along the Nepal-Tibet border, east of Langtang. Its valleys see far fewer trekkers than Langtang or Everest.
Dorje Lakpa
The peak is a broad, snowy mass with several summits. The usual height is about 6,966 m.
Nearby treks
Helambu, Gosainkunda and the Langtang valley give views. See Helambu guides and Gosainkunda guides.
Access
The range is reached by road from Kathmandu towards Sindhupalchok. Roads can be rough, so allow extra time.
Culture
Villages here include Tamang and Yolmo communities with their own traditions.
Why it is quiet
Fewer facilities and more difficult access keep numbers low.
A quieter region of Nepal
The Jugal Himal sees far fewer trekkers than Langtang or Everest. Tea houses are simpler and trails may be less clear, so a local guide is a real help. The reward is solitude and wide views over Himalayan foothills and the border ridge.
Getting there
From Kathmandu, roads head north-east towards Sindhupalchok and the Helambu hills. The road to the upper valleys can be rough and slow, particularly in the monsoon and after landslides. Allow a spare day, and ask your agency about current road conditions.
Geology and landscape
The range is made of high-grade metamorphic rock, uplifted by the collision of India and Asia. Steep valleys, rhododendron forest and terraced villages fill the lower slopes, and snowfields and glaciers crown the highest ground.
Combining with other treks
You can combine a Helambu trek with Gosainkunda, or add a few days in the Langtang valley. See our Langtang valley guides for the next steps.
