The best seasons for the Jiri route are March to May and October to November. The lower hills are warm and green in spring and clear in autumn. The monsoon, from June to September, makes the walk-in muddy and leech-prone.
Spring
March to May has flowers on the lower hills and long, warm days. The sky is often hazy in the afternoon. High altitude weather is generally stable in April and May.
Autumn
October and November have the clearest views and the driest trails. They are also the busiest months on the upper trail. The Jiri section stays much quieter.
Winter
December to February can be cold at night and snowy above 3,000 m. Days are short and some lodges close, so winter is only for experienced trekkers.
Monsoon
From June to September the lower trail is wet and slippery, roads can be blocked and views are limited. Leeches are common. We do not recommend this season.
Which month suits which trekker
If you want flowers and warm days, choose April. If you want clear views and drier trails, choose October. If you prefer quiet, choose the shoulder weeks, late March or late November, and accept more weather risk.
What to expect from the weather
Mornings are often clear and afternoons cloud over. Rain is possible in any season at the lower altitudes, so always carry a rain jacket.
