Everest Base Camp via Jiri: what the route is and who it suits

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The Jiri route to Everest Base Camp is the old walk-in approach. You take a road to Jiri, at about 1,900 m, and walk east for roughly a week over several ridges to Lukla before joining the standard trail. It adds about a week and a lot of ascent, but it gives you quiet villages and gentler acclimatisation.

The old way in

Before the airstrip at Lukla opened in the 1960s, most expeditions walked in from the west side. Jiri is where the road ends, and from there you cross a series of ridges and river valleys to reach the Khumbu. Walking it today is a way of seeing the Sherpa and Rai hill country that flying skips entirely.

What you add

The Jiri section adds about six to eight days compared with starting at Lukla. Your total trip length is usually 18 to 21 days from Kathmandu, depending on pace and rest days. You also climb and descend a great deal, because the route crosses ridges instead of following one valley.

What you gain

Because you gain height gradually, you arrive at Namche already well acclimatised. You also avoid the Lukla flight, which can be delayed by weather, and you walk through villages that see far fewer trekkers than the main trail.

What it costs

More days means a higher price, and more time away from home. The walking is not technical, but it is tiring. Do not choose it for a short holiday.

Who it suits

Trekkers who have time, enjoy long walking days, and want a quieter and more cultural approach. It is also a good choice if you want to avoid flying or if flights are disrupted.

What the villages are like

Jiri and the villages along the route are Sherpa, Rai and Tamang communities. Tea houses are family-run and simple, with local food such as dal bhat, potatoes and tea. You will see school children, mule trains and terraced fields rather than long lines of trekkers.

Questions people ask first

Is Jiri worth the extra time? If you have time and enjoy walking, yes. Can I do one way only? Yes, many groups walk in and fly out. Is it safe? The trail is well used by locals, and guides know it well.
