Jiri is about eight to ten hours from Kathmandu by road, on the Araniko and Jiri highways. Most trekkers take a private jeep or a local bus. Leave early, expect rough sections and allow for delays in the rainy months.
The road
The route leaves Kathmandu east along the Araniko Highway and then turns off onto a hill road towards Jiri. The surface is mixed, with stretches of tarmac and stretches of gravel, and landslides can block it in the monsoon.
Private jeep
A private jeep is faster and more comfortable than the bus. It usually leaves Kathmandu early in the morning and arrives in the afternoon. Your guide can arrange the vehicle, and you can stop for lunch on the way.
Local bus
Local buses are cheaper but slower and crowded. They suit budget trekkers with time, but they are not comfortable with big bags. Keep valuables with you.
Where you sleep
Many groups sleep in Jiri on the first night, at about 1,900 m, or walk down to Shivalaya. Both have simple lodges.
Plan around the weather
In the monsoon the road is slower and the trail is muddy. The best months for the whole trip are spring and autumn. Check the best time to go before booking.
What to carry on the road
Bring water, snacks, motion sickness tablets if you need them, and a layer for the morning. Keep your valuables in a small bag with you, and put the rest in a duffel on the roof or in the back.
If the road is closed
After heavy rain, landslides can block the road. Your guide will tell you early. A spare day at the start of the trip protects the rest of the plan.
