Flying to Lukla is faster and simpler. Walking from Jiri takes about a week longer, climbs more, and gives a quieter, more gradual approach. Choose Jiri if you have time and want a different experience, and Lukla if you want a standard Everest Base Camp trek.
Time
The walk-in adds six to eight days. A flight route is often 12 to 14 days in total, while the Jiri route is 18 to 21. If you have two weeks or less, Jiri is not realistic.
Cost
More days mean more guide, porter and lodge costs, but you save the Lukla flight. Overall the Jiri trip is usually dearer than the same trek from Lukla, mostly because of the extra days.
Acclimatisation
The Jiri route is good preparation. You spend a week between about 1,500 m and 3,500 m before reaching Namche, so your body is well adapted. This helps, but it does not replace rest days higher up.
Crowds and culture
Until Lukla you will meet far fewer trekkers. The villages are Sherpa, Rai and Tamang communities, and tea houses are smaller and more homely. After Lukla the trail is as busy as the standard route.
Weather risk
Flights to Lukla are often delayed by cloud, and at busy times the departure airport can change. The walk-in avoids that risk, though road conditions to Jiri can be affected by rain.
Mixing the two
Some trekkers walk in from Jiri and fly out from Lukla, and others fly in and walk out to Jiri. Flying out saves a week, while walking out gives a very different last week. Tell us your time and we can set the plan.
What to decide first
Decide how many days you can spend, how you feel about long walking days, and how much you want to avoid the Lukla flight. Those three answers settle most of the choice.
