Altitude and health on the Everest View trek

2 min read

The Everest View trek is lower than Everest Base Camp, with a highest sleeping point of about 3,900 m, but altitude can still cause symptoms in some people. Namche is already at about 3,440 m, and the flight to Lukla takes you quickly from Kathmandu at about 1,400 m to 2,860 m. A sensible schedule and good habits make a big difference. This is general guidance only and does not replace medical advice.

Why this trek is gentler

The route stays under about 4,000 m, where most healthy people adapt after a day or two. The rest day in Namche and the climb to the Everest View Hotel followed by sleeping lower is the standard way to acclimatise. This pattern follows the principle of climbing high and sleeping low.

Early signs to watch for

  • A headache that does not ease with water, rest and simple pain relief.
  • Nausea, poor appetite or unusual tiredness.
  • Dizziness or very poor sleep.
  • Breathlessness at rest.

Signs that mean descend now

Confusion, loss of coordination, a wet cough, breathlessness at rest or severe headache are danger signs. Tell your guide at once and descend. At this height a descent of a few hundred metres usually improves things quickly, but do not ignore symptoms or go higher when unwell.

Habits that help

  • Walk slowly and take breaks.
  • Drink water regularly through the day.
  • Eat even when appetite is low.
  • Avoid alcohol and sleeping pills at height.
  • Tell your guide how you feel every evening.

Who should be extra careful

Older travellers, people with heart or lung conditions, those who are pregnant and children need to take extra care. Speak to a doctor before you go, and keep your insurance details with you. If you are prone to altitude problems, tell your operator before booking so the schedule can be slower.

Insurance and evacuation

Choose insurance that covers trekking to at least 4,000 m and helicopter evacuation. Keep the policy number and emergency contact in your bag, and share them with your guide.
