Gear and Packing

Everest View trek packing list

2 min read

The Everest View trek needs less specialised gear than a high-altitude trek, but nights are still cold and weather changes quickly. The main constraint is weight, because the Lukla flight has a strict luggage limit, often around 15 kg including hand luggage. Pack light and bring layers rather than bulky items.

Clothing

  • Thermal base layers, two sets.
  • Fleece or light insulated mid layers.
  • A warm down jacket for evenings and mornings.
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers.
  • Trekking trousers and shorts, depending on season.
  • Warm hat, sun hat and buff.
  • Gloves, with liner gloves for the morning.
  • Wool socks, several pairs.

Footwear

Well broken-in trekking boots with ankle support are important, because the trail includes steep stone steps and gravel. Bring camp shoes for evenings and a spare pair of laces.

Sleeping and carrying

A sleeping bag rated to around minus 5 to minus 10 degrees is usually enough. You can rent one in Kathmandu. Bring a duffel bag for the porter and a daypack of 20 to 30 litres with a rain cover. Trekking poles help with the steep sections and the descents.

Small essentials

  • Sunglasses and strong sun cream, since UV is intense at altitude.
  • Lip balm, a headlamp and spare batteries.
  • A water bottle or bladder and purification tablets.
  • Personal first-aid kit, blister plasters and rehydration salts.
  • A power bank and charging cables.

What to leave in Kathmandu

Leave jeans, cotton clothes, valuables and extra gadgets at the hotel. Rent items such as down jackets or sleeping bags if you do not own them, and test them before you leave the city.
