Gosaikunda lies inside Langtang National Park, so you need a park entry permit and usually a TIMS card. Fees change, so confirm the current amounts with your operator. Most trekkers drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche or Syabrubesi.
Two permits that matter
Gosaikunda lies inside Langtang National Park, so you need the park entry permit. Most trekkers also carry a TIMS card, which registers you with the trekking authorities. Fees are set by the government and revised from time to time, which is why we avoid printing amounts that may be out of date. When you enquire, we confirm the current fees and arrange both permits for you.
Where the permits are checked
Entry is registered at the park post near Dhunche, where the trail begins. Carry your passport, a few passport-size photos and printed copies of your permits. Guides also check the permits at other posts along the trail.
Getting from Kathmandu
There is no flight; the access is by road. The route leaves Kathmandu through Balaju, follows the Trishuli river valley and climbs to Dhunche in six to eight hours. Local buses run daily, private jeeps are available, and the road has rough sections that can be slow after rain or landslides. Leave early in the morning to give yourself daylight on arrival.
Starting points
Most groups begin from Dhunche, which is the shortest approach. Syabrubesi is an alternative starting point if you are combining the lake with the Langtang valley. Sundarijal, Melamchi and Helambu are the common exit points when you cross the pass.
Guides, porters and lodging
A guide is strongly advised, mostly because of altitude and weather rather than navigation. A porter can carry the heavier bags, and Nepal tourism norms limit how much a porter is expected to carry. Lodges along the way are simple, with shared toilets and rooms that are not heated. Carry a sleeping bag rated for freezing nights.
Money, signal and charging
Carry rupees for all lodge costs, because there are no ATMs on the trail. Mobile coverage is patchy beyond Dhunche, and charging is usually paid. A small power bank is useful.
What to pack for the cold
Even in October, the night at the lake is below freezing, so pack a warm down jacket, a hat, gloves and a sleeping bag rated for minus five or lower. Lodge blankets are often thin. Waterproof boots, a windproof shell and trekking poles are all useful on the stony upper trail.
Common mistakes
The most frequent error is arriving at Dhunche late and then rushing the climb the next morning. Another is skipping the extra night at Sing Gompa. A third is carrying too much cash in one pocket. Split money across bags and keep your passport and permits in a waterproof sleeve.
