Jomsom to Muktinath: lodges, food and practical tips

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

This is one of the better-served routes in Nepal, with comfortable lodges and good food. A few practical points make it smoother.

Lodges

Jomsom, Kagbeni, Jharkot and Ranipauwa all have lodges, from simple to comfortable. In October book ahead through your guide.

Food

Dal bhat, noodles, momos, apple pie and Thakali dishes are common. Apple products are a local speciality.

What to pack

  • Windproof jacket, sun hat, sunscreen and lip balm.
  • Warm layers for evenings.
  • A buff or scarf against dust.
  • Poles for the climb and descent.
  • A headlamp and a power bank.

Cash

Carry enough cash. ATMs in Jomsom may be unreliable.

Etiquette

At Muktinath, dress modestly and follow temple rules. See the temple visit guide.

Lodge choices

  • Jomsom: many lodges, from simple to comfortable, close to the airport.
  • Kagbeni: atmospheric old-style lodges with courtyards.
  • Jharkot: a few simple lodges with quiet surroundings.
  • Ranipauwa: the busiest lodge cluster, close to the temple.

Health and comfort

Altitude at Muktinath is about 3,710 m, so take it easy on arrival and drink plenty of water. Dry air and wind can cause chapped lips and sore throats. Carry lip balm, moisturiser and a buff.

Money and communication

Carry cash in small notes, because card payments are rare and ATMs may be out of order. Mobile signal is available in Jomsom and Kagbeni but patchy beyond.

A packing list for the walk

  • Windproof jacket and light fleece.
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm.
  • A buff or scarf for dust.
  • Comfortable walking shoes or light boots.
  • Trekking poles for the climb and descent.
  • A small daypack with water and snacks.
  • Cash, copies of permits and your passport.

Money-saving and respectful habits

Eat where locals eat, buy water refills rather than plastic bottles where available, and carry your own rubbish out. Hiring a local guide or porter spreads income in the villages and improves the experience.

Common questions

Possibly in Jomsom, but do not rely on them. Carry cash.

Can I charge devices?
