From Khopra the path to Khayer Lake climbs steadily over grass and rock. It is a long day with little shelter and no tea houses, so preparation matters.
Start
Altitudes and walking times on this page are approximate and differ a little between maps, GPS devices and lodges. Treat them as planning figures, not survey data.
Leave Khopra Danda (about 3,660 m) by 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. to have clear weather and enough daylight.

Guide and navigation
Go with a licensed guide. The trail is not as obvious as on the main routes, and cloud can reduce visibility quickly. Turn back by midday if weather worsens.
Pacing and rest
Break the climb into three parts, with a rest after each. Eat a snack at each stop and keep sipping water. If your breathing becomes laboured, shorten the stop and go slower.
Emergency plan
Agree with your guide on a turnaround time before you leave, usually midday. Carry a charged phone, a whistle and a first-aid kit.
Common questions
How long is the walk from Khopra?
Allow 6 to 9 hours round trip.
Is there food on the way?
No. Carry food and water.
Do I need a guide?
Yes, we recommend one.
Navigation matters
The way to Khayer Lake has less traffic and fewer signs than the main trails. Go with a guide who knows the ridge, and avoid walking it in poor visibility.
Carrying what you need
Pack extra water, warm layers and snacks. Weather can turn fast on the open slopes, and you may be a long way from shelter.
Timing the climb
Start early so you can reach the lake and return before afternoon cloud. Carry lunch and extra layers.
