Khopra Ridge trek: facts, views and who it suits

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The Khopra Ridge, also called Khopra Danda, is a high ridge in the Annapurna region, north-west of Ghorepani. It is quieter than Poon Hill and the Annapurna Base Camp trail, and it offers a long view of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna peaks. Many of its lodges are community-run.

Key facts

Altitudes and walking times on this page are approximate and differ a little between maps, GPS devices and lodges. Treat them as planning figures, not survey data.

  • Height: about 3,660 m at the ridge, depending on the source.
  • Start: usually Ghorepani (about 2,860 m), Ghandruk or Tadapani, depending on the route.
  • Length: commonly 3 to 5 days from Ghorepani to Khopra and back, 7 to 10 days from Pokhara.
  • Season: March to May and October to November.
  • Lodges: simple, with many run by local communities.

What you see

  • Dhaulagiri and Tukuche Peak to the west.
  • Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Annapurna I to the east.
  • Nilgiri and the Kali Gandaki gorge to the north.
  • Sunrise and sunset on the ridge, often with few people.

How it differs from Poon Hill

Poon Hill is a sunrise viewpoint with many lodges and many visitors. Khopra is a multi-day ridge walk with fewer facilities and more solitude. See the Poon Hill sunrise guide.

Who it suits

  • Walkers who like quieter trails and long ridge views.
  • People with some trekking experience.
  • Anyone planning to add Khayer Lake. See the Khayer Lake guide.

Who may prefer something else

First-time trekkers wanting good facilities may prefer Poon Hill or Mardi Himal. See Mardi Himal vs ABC.

Practical questions

  • Do I need a guide? We recommend one, as trails are less used and signage is limited.
  • Can I do it as a loop? Yes, with different up and down routes.
  • Is it good for photography? Yes, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Why it is not for everyone

The trail is steeper and less developed than Poon Hill. Some sections are exposed to wind. Lodges are simple. If you need comfort and reliable food, Poon Hill is easier.
