Langtang Lirung is a hard, technical climb. Teams approach through the Langtang valley, set up base camp above Kyanjin Gompa and use several high camps on steep snow and ice. You need previous experience on Himalayan peaks above 6,000 m and a strong, well-led team.
Approach
The approach follows the Langtang trek to Kyanjin Gompa, and then climbs the lateral moraine to a base camp on the glacier side. It takes about a week of walking from the road.
On the mountain
Routes follow steep snow and mixed ground, and teams fix ropes. Camps are set up on small platforms. The route is long and demanding.
Hazards
Avalanche danger is the main risk, followed by crevasses, rockfall and bad weather. Teams watch conditions daily and turn back when they must.
Experience needed
You should have climbed peaks of 6,000 m or more, be skilled with crampons, ice axe and ropes, and be physically very fit.
Not for first-time climbers
If you are new to mountaineering, start with Yala Peak or another trekking peak in Langtang. They give you a safe step towards bigger climbs.
Team and support
A team usually includes a leader, experienced climbing Sherpas, a cook and porters. The group needs a clear plan for communication, rescue and weather decisions. A smaller, well-prepared team is often safer than a large one.
Training and gear
Train for months with endurance, strength and practice on snow and ice if you can. Gear includes double boots, crampons, harness, helmet and a very warm down suit or jacket. Ask your leader for a full list.
