The best way to see Langtang Lirung is the Langtang valley trek. The peak is visible from the upper valley, and the view from Kyanjin Gompa and Kyanjin Ri is the finest. Start early for clear light.
The valley walk
As you climb the valley from Syabrubesi through Lama Hotel and Langtang village, the peak shows through the trees, then stands clear from about Langtang village onwards.
Kyanjin Gompa
Kyanjin Gompa, at about 3,870 m, sits right below the peak. The north face fills the sky, and the views from the village are the closest you can get without climbing.
Kyanjin Ri
The short climb to Kyanjin Ri, about 4,600 m, gives a wider view. It takes two to three hours and is the best day trip from Kyanjin.
Morning light
Mornings are usually clear, and cloud builds up by midday. Photograph early, and keep layers for the cold.
Best time to see it
Autumn and spring give the clearest views.
What else you see
Along the valley you pass forest, yak pastures, stone houses and prayer walls. Kyanjin Gompa has a small cheese factory. Wildlife such as langur monkeys and red pandas live in the forests, though you are unlikely to see the red pandas.
Planning a short visit
A Langtang valley trek takes about seven to ten days. Add a day at Kyanjin for the Kyanjin Ri walk. If time is short, ask us about shorter routes.
