Langtang trek cost: what affects the price

3 min read

Langtang is generally one of the more affordable treks to arrange, because it is close to Kathmandu, needs no flight and has a short itinerary. We do not publish one fixed price, since the total depends on choices you make.

Fees

The main official costs are the Langtang National Park entry fee and the TIMS card. Based on the figures supplied to us, the park ticket is NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals and NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals, and TIMS is NPR 2,000 or NPR 1,000 respectively. If your route includes the Gosaikunda area, an additional weekly fee may apply. Rates can change, so confirm them before booking.

Transport

A private vehicle costs more than a public bus. The drive is long either way, so many groups choose comfort. Small groups sharing a jeep reduce the per-person cost.

Duration

More days mean more food, lodging and guide fees. A side trip to Gosaikunda or the Tamang Heritage trail adds to the cost.

Group size

Guides and vehicles are shared among the group, so larger groups pay less per head.

Guide and porter

A licensed guide is required on this route. A porter is optional, and it adds to the cost, but it improves comfort.

What to check in a quote

  • Are permits, TIMS and entry fees included?
  • Is transport private or shared?
  • How many nights are in the plan?
  • What happens if the weather adds days?

Send your dates and group size and we will prepare a clear quote.

Comparing options sensibly

Because Langtang is one of the easier treks to organise, prices can vary widely between operators. Compare what is included, such as meals, accommodation, guide, porter, transport and permits. A low price may mean basic transport, a large group or fewer services. Ask each operator to list inclusions and exclusions in writing.

Private and group departures

A private trek costs more per person but offers flexibility, while a group departure lowers the cost and offers company. Ask about group size, and whether additional charges apply for solo travellers. If you travel with family or friends, a private trek may be worth the extra cost.

Spending on the trail

Budget for drinks, snacks, charging, showers and tips. Prices are higher at Kyanjin Gompa than in the lower villages. Carry enough Nepali rupees, because there are no ATMs on the route.

Questions to ask

  • Does the price include transport to and from the trailhead?
  • How many guides and porters are provided?
  • What happens if the road is blocked or I need extra days?

Where the money goes

A large part of the cost covers road transport to Syabrubesi, guide and porter wages, permits and lodging in Kathmandu. The trek itself is relatively cheap compared with flights-based treks. Comparing what is included, such as private or public transport, matters more than small differences in headline price.

Ways to save sensibly

Join a group departure, use public transport with a guide, travel in shoulder months and carry your own snacks. Do not save on guide quality or insurance.
