Langtang Valley packing list: what to bring and what to skip

3 min read

Langtang moves from warm forest to cold, open pasture. A layered kit that handles both is better than one heavy jacket.

Clothing

  • Two base layers, one light and one warm.
  • A fleece or light insulated jacket.
  • A down or synthetic jacket for evenings and the upper valley.
  • A waterproof shell jacket and trousers.
  • Trekking trousers and optional shorts for the lower valley.
  • Sun hat, warm hat and gloves.

Footwear

Sturdy, broken-in boots with good grip, several pairs of socks and camp shoes. Blister care is worth carrying where you can reach it quickly.

Sleeping

A sleeping bag suited to cold nights and a liner. Rental bags are available in Kathmandu, but check their condition.

Other essentials

  • Trekking poles, which help on steep steps and descents.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Water bottles and purification tablets.
  • Headlamp with spare batteries.
  • First-aid kit and personal medicines.
  • Power bank and cables.

Seasonal extras

In the monsoon, add a pack cover and leech protection. In winter, bring heavier insulation, warm gloves and traction for icy sections.

Leave behind

Cotton clothing, heavy books and anything you will not use. Store extra bags at your hotel.

Choosing for a short trek

Because the trek is short, you can often manage with fewer items than for longer routes. Bring versatile layers that you can wear in many combinations, a good waterproof jacket and enough socks to keep your feet dry. Avoid carrying extras that you will not use, because the stone steps make weight more noticeable.

Protection from sun and cold

Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are essential at altitude, while gloves and a warm hat are needed for mornings and evenings. Keep a buff to protect your neck and face. A lightweight down jacket is helpful at Kyanjin Gompa and for the viewpoints.

Rent, buy or bring

Kathmandu has shops to rent or buy sleeping bags, jackets and poles, so you do not need to bring everything from home. Check quality and fit, and ask your operator for recommendations. Boots are the item that you should bring if you already own a well-fitting pair.

Extra items

  • Earplugs for noisy lodges.
  • A small first-aid kit and personal medicines.
  • A power bank and charging cable.

A balanced bag for a short trek

Because the trek is short, you can travel light. Aim for a main bag of about eight to ten kilograms with a daypack of four to five. Prioritise warm layers, rain protection, good boots and a sleeping bag. Leave excess gadgets and clothes in Kathmandu.

Small things that matter

  • Spare laces and a small repair kit.
  • Lip balm with sunscreen.
  • A pen and notebook for journaling.
  • A dry bag for electronics.
