Limi Valley trek: what it is and where it is

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The Limi Valley trek is a remote trek in Humla district, in the far northwest of Nepal near the border with Tibet. It passes old Tibetan-style villages, crosses two high passes at about 4,500 to 5,000 m, and takes about 15 to 20 days. It needs a permit and a flight to Simikot.

Where it is

Limi is a high valley in Humla, one of the most remote districts of Nepal. It lies close to the Tibetan border and has long had cultural ties with Tibet. For many years the area was closed to visitors, and it is still a restricted area today.

What the trek offers

Villages such as Jang, Halji and Til sit among barley fields, with stone houses and prayer walls. Above them are dry mountains, wide valleys and a feeling of space that few other treks give. The scenery is closer to the Tibetan plateau than to the green hills of central Nepal.

How long it takes

Most trips take 15 to 20 days, including flights from Kathmandu to Nepalganj and on to Simikot, and a few spare days for weather. The walk itself is about two weeks, depending on whether you start at Simikot or further along.

Conditions

Lodges are basic and often absent, so most groups camp or use homestays, with a cook crew and porters. Plan on self-sufficiency.

Who it suits

Experienced trekkers who like culture, space and quiet, and who are comfortable with long days and basic facilities.

What to pack

Bring warm layers, a four-season sleeping bag, strong boots, a hat and sun protection for the dry high-altitude light. Add water purification, because supplies are limited, and a good first-aid kit.

Questions people ask first

Is it safe? Yes with a licensed guide and good planning. Is it a long way from help? Yes, so travel insurance with evacuation is essential. Can I go in the monsoon? Parts of Limi are in a rain shadow, but flights and roads can still be affected.
